Since their first Walk in 2018, the People’s Diabetes Foundation’s message of support has reached all corners of Belize.
It all began in 2018, when the Peoples Diabetes Foundation Belize (PDF Belize) organised their first Walk, with the mission to support those living with diabetes and their loved ones. Motivated by the idea that ‘we all know someone or are ourselves living with diabetes,’ the foundation seeks to bring a strong message to every district across Belize: living with diabetes is a difficult challenge, but with the support of one’s community, it can be managed.
The first Walk organised by PDF Belize took place in their home district, inviting schools, businesses, and communities to participate and lend a voice to people with diabetes. The event started with a walk where participants formed a blue circle – the World Diabetes Day’s symbol – and concluded with a Health Fair for the community.
Over the years, organising the event has become increasingly expensive and uncertain. The Walk events grow in ambition and reach new districts, but that does not stop them from persevering in raising awareness among as many people as possible: ‘Why? Because we can do this together,’ says our Walk Ambassador in Belize.
PDF Belize hosts various events to generate excitement and involve stakeholders at all levels, including a nationwide competition, three kilometers walk, five kilometers run, and a health fair in different districts leading up to the annual Walk.
Despite the challenges, their dedication and efforts pay off as participants consistently show up, rain or shine.
In 2023, our Global Diabetes Walk Ambassador was ready to host their Walk and Health Fair in Cayo District. However, the persistent rain that had been falling for several days prior to the event raised concerns about a potential last-minute cancellation. On November 14, as the event began, the weather offered a respite and all the schools that had pledged their participation started to show up; even with the rain coming back, all 700 participants joined the Walk, showing their commitment to giving a voice to those living with diabetes.
There is stress and uncertainty in terms of finding resources for new locations or increasing the number of participants. Despite all that, PDF Belize manages to overcome these challenges year after year.
‘Our advice to anyone wanting to organise an event is to keep the focus on why they are sharing this moment or join the Global Diabetes Walk. Imagine a new generation who has the knowledge to help decrease the prevalence of diabetes as well as impact the quality of life for those living with diabetes and those being directly connected to it.’
When they were invited to become Global Diabetes Walk Ambassadors in 2022, the PDF Belize efforts to bring awareness, prevention, education, and support to individuals living with diabetes bolstered. Their organisation now has more members, and it has expanded to a national level, with a representation in all six districts of the country.
The organisation is also receiving more invitations for community outreach and requests for its services. ‘It might be a slow growth for grants and donations, but we are comfortable knowing we are making a difference. Saving Belize one fingerstick at a time!’
