Simon Gabritchidze has seen positive change in his community as a result of the walks he has organised as part of the NCD Alliance awareness initiatives in Georgia.
For Simon Gabritchidze Chair of Board at the Georgia NCD Alliance, the Global Diabetes Walk is transforming the community, one step at a time. The Walk is not just about physical activity; it is a catalyst for change, fostering awareness, promoting healthy lifestyles, and building a supportive community.
The Walk engages stakeholders from the bottom up to raise awareness about diabetes prevention and care. 'We have noticed that organising the Walk can inspire more people to volunteer, fostering a culture of giving back and civic engagement', Simon shares. He also notes that the Walk has nurtured a sense of community and mutual support. Individuals at risk or living with diabetes have been able to connect with others in similar situations, creating networks that provide encouragement and share resources.
The Walks organised by NCD alliance have also led to partnerships with central and local governments, healthcare providers, associations, businesses, and organisations. The Diabetes Walk that took place in Tbilisi on 14 November 2023 brought together the NCD Alliance in Georgia, Tbilisi City Council, and the Georgian Diabetes and Endocrine Associations Union. It was followed by a reception in the Tbilisi City Council in which record number of the stakeholders participated. The event led to increased advocacy for better healthcare policies and resources dedicated to diabetes prevention and management.
Moreover, the Walks have helped raise awareness about diabetes, leading to earlier diagnosis and intervention and improved health outcomes. By promoting regular physical activity, they have played a role in preventing and managing diabetes. Participants have been inspired to adopt healthier eating and engage in regular exercise after the event as well. These healthy habits have become the norm and are being passed down through generations.
'By organising Diabetes Walks, we can catalyse a wide range of positive changes, contributing to a healthier, more informed and more connected community', concludes Simon.
